Assessment of Geomorphological Potential in Desert Tourism Development: A Case Study of Khor and Biabanak County

Abstract

Khor and Biabanak County, with its vast expanse of deserts and dunes, is considered one of the unique geographical regions of Iran. This area, characterized by diverse and interesting geomorphological features, has immense potential for geotourism development. Notable features include sandy hills, salt lakes, historical villages, and protected natural areas, each offering distinct attractions for visitors. In this study, geomorphological maps were created utilizing a hierarchical four-level geomorphic method to differentiate various landscape complexities, along with landforms of the region using Google Earth images, field studies, slope maps, and geological maps. For evaluating geotourism values, three methods—Pereira, Peralang, and Reynard—were employed. The results indicate that Khor Salt Lake, due to its high scores in most geotourism values, is one of the best locations for geotourism development. This area, with its scientific, cultural features and suitable infrastructure, has high potential to attract tourists. Furthermore, the Mesr Desert, with high scores in various parameters, especially in complementary and utilization metrics, can also be considered an important tourism destination. Other regions, with improved infrastructure and increased attention, could also transform into significant tourist destinations. The evaluation methods of Pereira, Peralang, and Reynard indicate that areas with higher scientific, cultural, and socio-economic values typically possess greater geotourism value. Planning and investing in these areas can lead to increased tourist attraction and improvements in the economic and social status of the region. In conclusion, a comprehensive review and comparison of different parameters suggest that Khor Salt Lake and the Mesr Desert have high potential for tourism and geotourism development.
