Abstract

This study examines the impact of adaptive capacity on the livability of rural households in drought conditions. The statistical population comprises rural households in Bavi County, Khuzestan Province. Based on the Krejcie and Morgan table, a sample size of 347 household heads was selected using systematic random sampling. The primary research instrument was a structured questionnaire, whose reliability was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient and validity by a panel of experts. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, GIS, and Smart PLS software. The findings reveal that 83.27% of households exhibit low to moderate levels of adaptation, with the rural districts of Mollasani and Weis demonstrating the highest adaptive capacity under drought conditions. Additionally, results indicate that the studied rural households do not possess an adequate level of livability, as 75.51% fall within the medium-to-low livability range. Structural equation modeling further demonstrates that the dimensions of the sustainable livelihood model—human, financial, social, natural, and physical capitals—have a significant positive effect on household livability, collectively explaining 59.7% of the variance. These insights highlight the essential role of adaptive capacity in enhancing the resilience and sustainability of rural communities affected by drought. The study underscores the necessity of targeted interventions aimed at strengthening livelihood assets to improve the living conditions of vulnerable households.
