Emotional solidarity of host community in tourism: Effect of community attachment, perceived risk and social impacts (Case study: Tabriz city)

Abstract

Objective: Tourism has gained significant momentum in international societies. With economic growth and changes in consumer behavior, the tourism industry has transformed from a luxury product to a necessary product. Tourism development is rapidly improving, and the role of the local community as the main supporter of tourism in the destination has increased more than ever. Therefore, this study, focusing on the role of the local community in tourism, seeks to examine the role of social attachment and perceived risk on the emotional solidarity of the host community towards tourism with the role of mediating the perceived social effects of tourism.

Methods: The present study is applied in terms of purpose, descriptive survey in terms of nature and method and was conducted cross-sectionally. The study population in this study is the residents of Tabriz city, 314 people were selected as a sample. A standard questionnaire was used to collect data, whose reliability was confirmed using Cronbach's alpha and its composite reliability and validity were confirmed using legal validity, face validity and construct validity. Structural equation modeling and pls software were used to analyze the data.

Results: The results of the study showed that the effect of perceived risk, social attachment and perceived social effects on emotional solidarity was confirmed. On the other hand, the mediating role of perceived social effects of tourism in the relationship between perceived risk and emotional solidarity was confirmed. However, the role of perceived risk on social attachment was not confirmed.

Conclusions: Overall, the findings of this study show that the local community, based on the perceived social effects of tourism, existing risks and their social attachment, feels solidarity and support for the development of tourism in their community. This solidarity is important in tourism development and their cooperation and participation in this process.
