Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of good governance on urban eventfulness using a mixed-methods approach in the metropolitan city of Isfahan. The importance of this study lies in the fact that good governance, through components such as participation, transparency, accountability, and justice, can provide the basis for improving the quality of urban management and the formation of event-oriented cities.
Methods: This study is applied in terms of purpose and adopts a mixed-methods (qualitative–quantitative) approach. In the first qualitative phase, the indicators and components of good governance and urban eventfulness were identified and extracted through semi-structured interviews with experts. In the second qualitative phase, thematic analysis was employed to examine the role and relationships of the extracted indicators within the context of urban management, and the findings served as the basis for developing the quantitative research instrument. In the quantitative phase, data were collected through a researcher-developed questionnaire administered to 384 citizens and experts and were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in AMOS software. The reliability of the instrument was also confirmed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.921.
Results: The findings indicated a positive and statistically significant relationship between good governance and urban eventfulness (β = 0.74). Among the components of good governance, citizen participation, transparency, and efficiency and effectiveness had the greatest influence on urban eventfulness. Furthermore, the qualitative findings revealed that limited citizen participation, weak consensus orientation, spatial inequality, and poor coordination among urban institutions are among the most important barriers to the development of urban eventfulness in the metropolitan city of Isfahan.
Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that achieving urban eventfulness in Isfahan Metropolitan City requires simultaneous attention to the managerial, social, and spatial dimensions of urban governance. Strengthening participation, transparency, and consensus orientation can improve the quality and sustainability of urban events.
