Estimating land subsidence using radar interferometry technique and groundwater level changes (Malard Plain study area)

Abstract

Objective: The risk of land subsidence can always have different causes, including dissolution, compaction of deposits, slow ground movements, excessive extraction of groundwater or human operations such as mining and extraction of oil and gas resources. In this study, Sentinel 1 radar images from 2016 and 2024 were used to assess subsidence in the Mallard Plain, and SARSCAPE software was used to process the information. Among the results of this study, we can mention the findings of this study using piezometric data, which, according to the interpolation map, the groundwater level of the plain has a downward trend despite seasonal fluctuations. The results of the water level survey showed that a 6-meter decrease in groundwater level can be observed over 8 years. A study of the subsidence situation in the last five years from 2014 to 2024 in the study area shows that the maximum subsidence is 9 cm, this issue can mainly be attributed to the issue of groundwater extraction for drinking water, agriculture and possibly other influential factors such as geology and related tectonic features. A 9 cm subsidence for residential use can provide unsafe living conditions for residents and increase their risk of land hazards.
