Abstract

Cycling, as a sustainable method, leads to improved physical and mental health and reduced air pollution and traffic. However, various factors in local cycling routes play a significant role in individuals' decisions, especially women, to use this mode of transportation. The objective of this research is a phenomenological analysis of the factors influencing the promotion of local cycling, based on the lived experiences of women in District 2 of Tabriz Municipality. This study was conducted using in-depth interviews in the region, and the data obtained were analyzed using phenomenology and thematic analysis methods. Findings showed that negative societal attitudes towards women's cycling and family restrictions are among the main barriers to cycling. Additionally, economic problems such as the high cost of bicycles and related expenses and the lack of safe and suitable infrastructure are also considered significant obstacles. In contrast, the benefits of cycling, such as improved physical and mental health, reduced stress, and increased vitality, were among the advantages mentioned by women. Furthermore, creating dedicated cycling routes, public awareness campaigns, and organizing festivals and promotional campaigns were proposed as incentives for cycling. The phenomenological analysis of the interviews showed that negative societal attitudes, economic problems, lack of safe infrastructure, and safety concerns are among the main barriers to women's sense of security in local pedestrian and cycling routes. These barriers require changes in societal attitudes, financial support, and the development of suitable infrastructure. These findings can help in formulating effective policies and programs to improve security in cycling routes and promote it among women. Based on the findings of this research, it is recommended that comprehensive and coordinated actions be taken to improve cycling infrastructure, change negative societal attitudes, and provide financial support to facilitate the use of cycling.
