Abstract

Objective: The main objective of this study is to analyze the temporal and spatial displacement of a section of the Sefidrud River in Gilan Province, northern Iran. The research aims to understand how geomorphological changes, driven by hydrological conditions and anthropogenic activities, have impacted the river’s morphology, resulting in environmental and socio-economic consequences.

Methods: This study employed remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and techniques to monitor and evaluate morphological changes in the Sefidrud River over a 40-year period (1985–2025). Key parameters such as the sinuosity index and river channel width were used to assess channel shifts. Satellite imagery and schematic profile analyses were utilized to map erosion and sedimentation patterns across different decades

Results:

Findings indicate that between 1985 and 2005, the river channel was primarily affected by widespread sedimentation due to increased channel area and reduced flow energy. In contrast, during the 2005–2025 period, this trend reversed, with the active channel experiencing significant narrowing, intensified lateral erosion, and increased morphological dynamism. The total river width decreased drastically from approximately 23,467 meters in 1985 to 4,176 meters in 2025—an overall reduction of about 82%. A consistent decrease in sinuosity across all sections reflected a shift toward a straighter river path. Additionally, lateral channel migration was predominantly westward, with more significant changes observed in the upstream and midstream reaches

Conclusions: The study reveals a clear temporal shift from sediment-dominated processes in the early decades to erosion-dominated dynamics in recent years. These changes highlight the impact of both natural and human-induced factors on river morphology. The results underscore the importance of continuous monitoring using remote sensing and GIS techniques for sustainable river management and planning.
