Selecting an appropriate location for urban development is crucial due to geomorphological hazards. Active faults, slope and elevation, proximity to earthquake epicenters, and drainage networks represent the most significant constraints for urban expansion. These factors may induce earthquakes, landslides, floods, and erosion, threatening urban infrastructure and hindering sustainable development. Therefore, identifying and analyzing geomorphological hazards is an essential prerequisite for accurate site selection in urban planning.
This study aims to identify suitable lands for physical development in Bostanabad city. Four main factors were assessed, including topography (elevation, slope, slope aspect), geology (lithology, distance from faults, distance from epicenters), hydrology (distance from main and secondary waterways), and human factors (land use, distance from roads and communication lines), represented by ten sub-criteria. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied for weighting, and a zoning map was generated. Results showed that the distance from earthquake epicenters had the highest weight (0.232), followed by the distance from faults (0.179) and the distance from main waterways (0.161).
The analysis revealed that suitable areas for urban development are primarily scattered across central, southeastern, southwestern, and parts of northeastern Bostanabad. In contrast, the northern sector, influenced by the Tabriz North Fault, is not appropriate for development. Overall, highly suitable and suitable zones account for 39.85% (30.36 km²), relatively suitable zones for 19.97% (15.21 km²), while relatively unsuitable and unsuitable zones comprise 40.18% (30.6 km²) of the study area.
